San Diego residents have a choice: fly out of the convenient but limited San Diego International Airport (SAN), or make the drive to LAX for more flights, better prices, and international options. Here is how to decide which airport makes sense for your next trip.
San Diego International Airport (SAN) — The Pros
SAN is incredibly convenient for San Diego residents. Located in the heart of the city along the harbor, most San Diegans live within 20-30 minutes of the airport. It is a single-runway airport with two terminals, which means shorter walks, faster security lines, and a more relaxed experience overall.
For domestic flights to major hubs like Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, and the Bay Area, SAN has plenty of nonstop options on Southwest, Alaska, Delta, United, and American.
SAN — The Limitations
SAN is a mid-size airport, and that comes with trade-offs. International routes are limited — there are a handful of flights to Mexico and Canada, but if you are heading to Europe, Asia, or South America, you will almost certainly need to connect. That connection adds hours to your travel day and creates opportunities for delays and missed flights.
Fares from SAN also tend to run higher than LAX on competitive routes. Airlines have less competition at SAN, and the pricing reflects it.
LAX — The Pros
LAX is the largest airport on the West Coast and the fifth busiest in the world. It offers nonstop flights to virtually every major city on Earth — over 90 international destinations and 70+ domestic routes. Competition among airlines is fierce, which often means lower fares, especially for international travel.
If you are flying to London, Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, or anywhere in Latin America, LAX likely has a nonstop flight that saves you a connection. The time saved by avoiding a layover often offsets the drive.
LAX — The Downsides
The obvious downside is the drive. LAX is roughly 120 miles north of San Diego, and the trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Factor in the time to get to the airport, park or get dropped off, and clear security, and you are looking at 4 to 5 hours of travel time before your plane even leaves the ground.
LAX itself is also significantly more crowded and complex than SAN. Nine terminals, construction seemingly everywhere, and a pickup/drop-off process that tests even experienced travelers.
When to Choose LAX Over SAN
- International flights — Especially to Europe, Asia, Australia, or South America where SAN has no nonstop options
- Price-sensitive travel — When the fare difference is $100+ per person, the drive to LAX pays for itself
- Red-eye flights — LAX has far more late-night departure options
- Airline loyalty — If you fly a carrier that has a hub at LAX (Delta, United, American), the route options multiply
- Group travel — When the per-person savings across a family or team justifies the drive
Make the LAX Drive Easy
The biggest objection to flying from LAX is the drive. But with the right car service, the drive becomes the most relaxing part of your travel day. San2LAX picks you up at your San Diego door in a Cadillac Escalade or GMC Yukon Denali and drops you at your LAX terminal — no driving, no parking, no stress.
